Deploy GPO to VDI with DEM (Dynamic Environment Manager)

When managing a VDI desktop, you may need to customize many different settings for each VDI dektop. Besides doing this on VDI one by one, a more effective way is doing so with GPO.

The AD itself already has this capibility of doing so. But under some circumstances, you may feel not flexibile by using AD to deploy GPO. Following are some eaxmples I can think of.

  • You don't want to directly import GPO provided by software vendors to AD.

  • The GPO policy is going to assign to specific AD group rather than OU.

  • Complete the GPO testing and deployment cycle within Horizon solution.

By all requirments above, you may need a new way to achieve it. Dynamic Environemnt Manager (DEM) is the alternative way you looking for. This blog will show you how to deploy GPO to VDI with DEM. Let's get started.

First of all, you need to finish the deployment of the DEM server and DEM agent to the VDI desktops.

Next step you need to import corresponding GPO to DEM. Following is the procedures for reference.

  • Login to the DEM server and launch the DEM console.

  • Click the "User Environment".

  • Click "Manage Templates".

  • Click "Add Folder".

  • Click "Browse".

  • Browse to the folder holding the ADMX file.

  • My example is going to deploy watermark which is a GPO bundled with Horizon solution.

  • So I just select the folder holding this ADMX. You can obtain this ADMX from the Horizon download page too.

  • Click "OK".

  • Click "OK".

  • Click "OK".

  • Click "Close".

  • Now the DEM is ready to assign GPO.

  • Click "User Environment".

  • Click "ADMX-based Setting".

  • Click "Create".

  • Assign a name for this DEM policy.

  • Click "Select Categories".

  • Select the corresponding GPO key.

  • Click "OK".

  • Click "Edit Policies".

  • Select the GPO item you are going to configure.

  • Double click and edit the item as you want.

  • Close the window after edit.

  • Select "Conditions".

  • Click the "Add" button.

  • There have many conditions you can pick. You can choose to assign the GPO by all options under the put down list.

  • My example will apply the GPO to a specific OS type.

  • So I just select "Operating System".

  • And then select the OS type I need.

  • Click "OK".

  • Click "Save".

  • Now the DEM policy is ready.

  • For all VDI with DEM agent installed, the policy will be downloaded and execute if the target VDI match the condition.
