Set Maximum Bandwidth Consumption for Each VDI Session

Updated: Sep 13, 2023

In daily VDI operation, it always good to have a bandwidth limit configured per each VDI session. Since we don't know what kind of action user will perform on VDI. Maybe playing a HD video, copying a huge file across, or printing a big document over VDI session.

Without a bandwidth control, users experience may affected if some one consumed all bandwidth. To avoid this, Horizon can apply maximum bandwidth control. So that administrators don't need to worry this kind of issue.

To do this, there have 2 different ways. One is applying though AD GPO. The other is configuring through Dynamic Environment Manager. Following sections will cover the both ways.

1. Apply through GPO

Horizon solution include many configurable parameters through GPO. Those GPO is named Horizon bundled ADMX template.

You can find this Horizon bundled ADMX template in your Horizon download page. The first step to make the GPO ready for configuration is importing Horizon bundled ADMX template to the AD. You may refer following post of how to doing so.

After that, you can create the GPO with the AD Group Policy Management Tools.

  • Open Group Policy Management of the Domain.

  • Create a new GPO and assign a name for it.

  • Navigate to "Computer Configuration" -> "Policies" -> "Administrative Template" -> "VMware Blast" -> "Max Session Bandwidth" policy.

  • You can edit it by enabling the policy and assign a maximum value. The value is in kbps. May example is setting the limit to 300kbps per session. You may adjust the value to match your use case.

2. Apply through Dynamic Environment Manager (DEM)

DEM is one of the key component of Horizon solution. You will need an Horizon Enterprise license to enable the policy control feature of DEM.

Once you have deployed the DEM, you can create the bandwidth policy.

  • Launch the DEM admin Console.

  • Navigate to "User Environment" tab.

  • select "Horizon Smart Policies" on left pane.

  • Click "Create" Button.

  • Assign a name for the policy.

  • Check the box "Max session bandwidth".

  • Assign a value. The value is also in kbps.

  • Next you will need to assign the policy to corresponding users.

  • Click the "conditions" tab.

  • Click "Add" button. You will see a lot of different condition can use for assignment.

  • I will assign the policy to a dedicated OU for example. So i have selected the "Organization Unit".

  • You can either assign the policy to Computer of Users.

  • Click the "Browse" button.

  • Select the OU you are planing to assign.

  • Click "OK".

  • Click "OK".

  • Click "Save".

----- END -----
